Photography With a Mission

November 8, 2010 angie

This post is part of my 29 Days of Giving Campaign.  You can see the rest of the posts in this series here.

I have a lengthy list of people who inspire me in regards to photography.  There are those in real life who've captured my family in ways that I would love to emulate.  There are those in the blogging world whose work gets my creative juices flowing.

There's only one person, though, who I can credit with actually teaching me how to use my camera so that I can take the kinds of pictures I see in my mind.

I first met Sarah Newman through my introductory photography class with Indy Photo Coach.  She was a fabulous teacher, easy to understand but challenging us in our work.  It's been over a year since I first took her class, but she continues to inspire me with the beautiful pictures she takes with LinneaLiz Photography.

Sarah is traveling to Malawi, Africa with Circle of Hope this January as part of a missions trip.  Her job while she's there is to photograph the Malawian people, to capture their needs and the needs of the orphans waiting to be sponsored.  If anyone has the heart and talent to capture a moment and tell a story with a photograph, it's Sarah.

Tell me this picture doesn't capture everything that is precious about my own child:

Photo by none other than Sarah Newman, of course!

Today I Gave:  a donation to go towards Sarah's plane ticket to Malawi.  I can't wait to see her photographs, and to learn what else I can do to help.  If you'd like to help out as well, you can learn more on her Send Sarah to Africa facebook page.

Today I Received:  the gift of solitude.  I'm so thankful for those few hours each week when both kids are in school.  I'm at my best when I have a healthy mix of family time and me time.  It was a hectic weekend, and my soul needed some quiet time in my home this morning to tackle the mountain of laundry and to gather my thoughts.

You have grown so much as a photographer since getting your dslr and going to that first class. Your skills at framing and getting a great shot are evident. Keep on shooting and treat yourself to that new lens you’ve been wanting 🙂

Has it really been a year since our photography class?

Thanks so much, Jen! Would never have thought to take a class with Indy Photo Coach if it wasn't for you!

It has, can you believe it?  I keep saying I'm going to take another class one of these days.  Maybe when this 365 project is over I'll actually feel like it again!
